in 45 rpm mode

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

You should always indicate the make and model number when asking a question!

There is fault with the servo control amplifier that drives the capstan
motor. In many of the lower end tape players this circuit is built in to the
motor itself. In the higher end players, this circuit is a separate circuit
board from the motor. Many of the higher end tape machines use a motor that
has a tacho feedback. If the tacho section is defective, the motor would be
changed to repair the problem.

In the case where the servo amp is built in to the motor, a new motor is
installed to service the machine. The other type are able to be serviced by
any knowledable technician.

If the unit has mechanical speed selection mechanism, as a whole lot of late
60 machines, you may have a bent bracket or even sloppy springs and latching
mechanisms. May take a bit of dilignet investigation to determine if the
motor is servo or if you have some mechanical alignment problem.

Maybe a bad motor, or pinch roller not engaging. Or there could be tape
wrapped around the capstan from a previous tape-eating.
