The alternator can put out way over a hundred volts at 6 or 7 thousand
rpm. As for the amperage, I've had my Ford 3G alternator put out over
150 amperes, as measured with a dc clip on ammeter. Feeding that welding
current backwards into a lead acid battery would probably cause an
explosion.

The battery has to be charged via another alternator, regulated at
normal output voltage, or a battery charger.

I notice with some amusement that one of AlwaysWrong's multiple
identities has now chimed in...
