Ticking sound and won't start VCR

Hi everyone

Recently bought a pretty cool Mitsubishi VCR at auction that won't start.
I've checked all the capacitors I can find without finding a fault. It simply won't start and constantly gives a ticking sound around the area of the photo.

Any suggestions?
Kind regards Erik

Hi Erik, not the best description ‘ticking’!.
A visual inspection of capacitors will only show obvious signs, it won’t show high ESR or shorted caps. Take them out of circuit and use an ESR meter.
Can you elaborate on ‘ticking’?.

'Ticking' is usually indicative of a PSU going into protection mode for one reason or other. The fault may not necessarily lie in the PSU itself (as common as that actually is) so if you can disconnect the PSU board output and the fault (ticking) stops then you will need to fault-find the rest of the machine.

I've discontented the capacitors around the psu and tested them. There are a lot of other capacitors away from the PSU (and sound) but figured those need to be checked (?). I don't have a separate psu board though so not sure how I can disconnect the output

Yes, that's definitely the noise of an overloading (going into self protection) psu.

The fault is most likely on the secondary-side. Check the secondary-side rectifier(s).

That video was really vaige...
make sure you don't have one of those overloading psu manufacturers in there too!

How did you test them? You need an ESR checker to be sure....

not sure how I can disconnect the output
You'll have to trace the pcb tracks and, perhaps, make a deliberate break in the track to isolate the output from the PSU to the remaining circuitry. Post a pic of the underside of the board and a close-up of the secondary side components.

Oh I thought you could check and see if the resistance increases consistently. (Like in this video
)

I was able to find a rectifier right next to the power cable input . But are they more than one?
Attached some more pics of front and back side of the board.
Thanks!

No offence to the OP, but do you realise the dangers of mains voltage? Because it doesn’t appear that you do!.
Please be careful poking around.

sadly a very poor way of testing cap's ... a proper capacitance meter (some multimeters have capacitance testing capabilities)

Unfortunately I couldn't find a free service manual this one cost five bucks U.S. I hope you're in the UK cuz it won't work in the U.S. If you're in the U.S.guess what it'll make a clicking sound cuz more likely to be plugged into 110VAC @60 Hertz while the UK would be 230VAC@50Herts.
It all depends if you acquired this VHS for a small amount of money then $5 isn't too bad.Guidance is free on this site if you have any questions. The best part if you share the service manual with us,we will all be on the same page (Pun Intended).
