Transistor BJT amplifiers

Hi guys.
I am currently studying bi-polar junction transistors but I have come stuck at how they can be used as amplifiers. I understand how transistors work and how they can be used for logical gates but I don't understand how they can be used as amplifiers. Any information on the workings of BJT's as amplifiers would be hugely appreciated.
