What is the difference between an isolated and a non-isolated triac?

[EDIT: irrelevant stuff removed]

I'd say whether it is gated by the ac supply it is switching or some other "isolated" supply.

my fancy meter tells me all the thyristors I have purchased are bad
Since you don't say just how you achieved this, then not much anyone can say either way.

Don't you have Google...??

Most thyristors read as low ohms resistors when measured using those Chinese component testers.

The isolated/nonisolated may refer to the packaging where some higher powered devices are totally plastic encapsulated with no terminal connected to the body of the device. Makes for easier mounting but not so good for power dissipation circuits.

found this great write-up on bidirectional thyristors....
If I was not able to get a thyristor(of which I have ordered some from the orient)
What kind of diodes and caps could I use in a replacement circuit?
er how would I choose the diodes? by volt and Amp and then use a cap of the same Gate amps?

Let me rephrase your question in a way that everyone can understand.

"I need some double ended chalk. What sort of cheese can I use to make that?"
