I've been disassembling a circuit to see how it works and have come across a part
that no-one in my uni is 100% sure about

either a printed resistor or inductor

what did it come out of?
where in the device did it come from
make model and more photos

It comes from an ignition circuit/spark generator. Has no model number on that part. But it would most likely be a inductor in that case since it's in the secondary side of the transformer where there will be no reason for a resistor to be there
Sorry if I'm being very vague. It's hard to explain :S

The pic didn't really help unfortunately
have you used a multimeter in Ohms range and see if you can measure a resistance of the part ?

Just checked and the multi-meter is not able to measure any resistance in the part o_O

OK so it may be open circuit

any chance of a better pic of it ... it's small and far away in that first pic you posted
is there any text on it on either side ?

Some transformers have fuses on the secondary side. That would explain the zero-resistance.

My camera is struggling to focus. These are the best I can get them close up.
There is no letters or numbers on it which seems a bit strange o_O

did the meter real OL or 0.0 or something else ?

That's ok :)
still looks like a carbon track resistive element on a ceramic substrate rather than an inductor

What its purpose is, without seeing a diagram is almost impossible to tell ?
have you tried to google for a circuit diagram or anything else ?

The multi meter showed 0.0 as if it's an open circuit.

Suppose it was a resistive element. Would it be used to limit the current on the secondary?

My task is to reverse engineer it for part of my project :eek: from what I can see, the primary side has a self oscillating MOSFET to control the switching. Secondary side has a few capacitors and diodes that look like they are arranged as a voltage multiplier and with that ceramic part connected in parallel to few of the capacitors.

I'm guessing this circuit follows a few concepts of what I'm looking at
