From where?

** news.individual.net

They don't do binaries. When I required binaries, I used these guys:

unlimited.newshosting.com

Expensive though. Still, excellent retention and impressive range of NGs.

I am going to have to work out whether I need binaries enough to make
the cost worth it.
It looks like $50 block for ever?? from these guys seem the best deal

AstraWeb have been suggested numerous times upthread.

You could trial them for a measly *$10* for a 25GB block and see how you
like their service - If you're just downloading images even a 25GB block
should last _ages_.

It only seem to carry about 14 oe less binary pictures groups, whereas
bigpond had a lot more

If photography is what you are after, why not join something like this

http://www.photoforum.com.au

Face it, Usenet is slowly dying many people are leaving for forums
specialising in their subject. Forums are more flexible for things like
pictures and they, in general, are moderated with a lot less noise and
flames. This gives ISPs a lot less reasons to maintain their news
servers and I expect a lot less to do so in the future..

Some servers even offer free trials (Giganews used to at least).
If he has a CC or DC, then he could at least *try* some and then learn
what the advantages of a real server are. At no cost... unless he now
turns around and claims he doesn't trust them with his CC details...

Yes, well thanks for encouraging the demise of Usenet... talk about a
self-fulfilling outcome with that attitude ;)

If/when Usenet is gone, I'll be checking emails, buying shit, or
downloading shit. And that's about all.

Don't mind cc details in the case of one offs(no more unannounced
charges in a years time), do mind if they require signing up for direct
debit.

So open a bank account and use it for nothing other that a direct debit
account and only put the required monthly amount in it each month. You then
have total control as to how much the payments are and how long you want
them to continue.

There's plenty of ways around this that *don't* involve whinging :)

Yup, although I'd suggest a VISA debit card linked to a bank account
rather than just a plain old bank account, as that gives you another
commonly used payment method... and a little better protection
(depending on where or who you buy from).
I have just such an account for all online purchases.

Astraweb accept PayPal and have done for some time, so there's no need
to provide CC/banking details directly to them.

I'll stay with it too, but we are in the minority. I use the internet as
a big reference library, I've given up buying programming books, its
quicker and cheaper to just google it.

Yeah, I forgot about that one, definitely the ultimate resource.
But as for 'social networks' go, this is it for me. I have a Faecebook
account but I use it for the for sale groups and some special interest
stuff.

Forums are not the answer, they are a solution looking for a problem.
In many forums, whilst the level of politness is higher (funny how
giving someone a badge and making them the sheriff can do that), there
are still just as many inane and pointless posts.

Worst of all you cannot kill file a forum so that you don't see the
crap from the loonies (take a bow Jonz).

I'm involved in a BMW motorcycle forum and wanted to know if I could
get away with replacing the cam whilst leaving the cylinders in place.

Two days of drivel telling me stuff i already knew until someone
offered to Pm me and confirmed that I could and told me the things to
watch out for in the process.

I think the signal to noise ratio in forums is worse because Usenet,
whilst a complete anarchy requires a particularly robust form of
stupidity to hang around if you are not wanted (eg David Z, Ozliar and
of course the pie smasher). But, at least in Usenet they can be kill
filed.

Yup. Personally I find them way worse than here, and especially when
there are moderators.

Agree, despite some of the crap its still a good source of valuable
information.

TA... Found what I needed.

I think that I'll be ready for the R65 to make noise in about a
fortnight. That is to say I have about 3 hours work left to do when my
parcel from motobins.co.uk arrives.
