I want to combine two component video sources into a projector.

I could use a switch but since only one component video source will be
powered up at any one time could I buy 3 rca y female splitters and combine
the 2 sets of component cables into one output.

Would such an approach cause an impedence mismatch and problems or could it
work ok

Yes, it would. The 75 ohm termination resistors would still be present
even with the unit switched off.
Some sort of switcher, or buffer amplifier, would still be necessary.

If you are sure they wont be outputting all at once, it should be okay
i think.
It shouldnt damage anything otherwise, and a y-cable (or adaptor)
doesnt cost much for a try.
