And how could you make the air ionized?

High voltage wnd point emitters, or UV light.
Maybe they use a fog...

There is only the hint: lasers. Maybe the air is pre-ionized? Or made
very turbulent?

The display is not volumetric. It is planar, like a regular screen. The only
unique thing about it is the fact that the image floats in midair.

Here's an interesting link on ionized laser pathways, don't know if it's
related:

The "O2" in their name implies something to do with ionized air and ozone,
perhaps artificial smog, but it would have to be very minute quantites as
smog is harmful to lungs.

Here's another very interesting document describing Rayleigh scattering of
lasers, which can be calculated based on the temperature and pressure of the
scattering medium.

I have one other theory that is based on much simpler physics: the device
supposedly modifies the air going through it, without adding anything. That
rules out fog liquid or water. My guess is that the device is a heater
designed to produce a laminar flow with a very sharp temperature boundary.
This boundary could have refractive effects that bend projected light toward
the viewer. A very common demonstration of this effect can be seen as
water-like mirages on sun-heated paved roads, caused by sharp temperature
boundaries near the surface of the road.
