I know it depends, but im asking a general sorta newbie question so please be gentle...

The same thing is a plasma speaker versus a mechanical speaker - versus a piezoelectric?

What's the intention? That defines what is considered "loss": being not what was intended.
You are considering using arc lighting?
Spark gaps of that type are usually protection devices, designed to limit voltage to the voltage that breaks over the gap, prevent voltages dangerous to other parts of the circuit doing damage.

Just a circuit interrupter, the most efficient it can possibly be, given value for money. Im just making a spark gap oscillator.

Keep it small or low frequency. Electronics history is full of spark gap oscillators that in today's world might interfere with radio and essential services and possible bring the attention of the authorities.

Ive got a voltage multiplier on the way, Last night I was trying to make a 30v spark gap by slipping a rolly paper between two cutoffs of copper tape but couldnt do it, its just too micronic to do! :)
