Brand isn't real important at this point. At nine years old he will most
likely damage it beyond use either by dropping it, leaving it out in the
rain, or improper application, before too long. I wouldn't spend more than
$20. Make sure it has voltage, and current modes, in both AC and DC, and
multiple resistance scales (x1 - x100 etc.). Many of the cheap models lack
lower resistance scales. After he becomes more advanced, and skilled, you
can invest in something more elaborate, accurate, and costly.
Radio Shack, other electronic supply stores, home improvement stores, etc.,
will be good sources.
Radio Shack, and others, have experimenter kits with supplies, and labs
prepared.
Most important, secure someone locally as a resource to answer his
questions, and evaluate his activities safety wise.
Kudos to you for encouraging this type of experience in a young child. Who
knows in a short time he may be disassembling your cars, and other
appliances. :-]
