To what do you base this on?

I was taught all of that stuff in depth when I was in grade school, some
40 years ago. My son is currently in elementary school, and that is
what they are doing right now.

-Chuck

I can only base it on the people I have talked to about it. I suppose they
tend to be mid 20s to mid 30s and hail from the top right hand side (Boston,
New York and surrounding areas). Not exactly a representative sample I
suppose but it was just an example. I wish I could offer another example
because I know I have been shocked a few times by the "wrong" information
that some people have been taught at school in the US.

Wrong means "different to what I was taught" :)

The USA is somewhat larger (amd more diverse) than the UK.
For that matter my little state (Oregon) is a bit larger than the
UK. Don't judge all of us by those NE elite snobs. :)

That's what the inhabitants of those places think :)

A question I've actually had: "This Cambridge University you're going to
study at... what part of London is that in?" :)

Actually I "Went to school" with many of the kids from those
tribes from around my area, as well as participation in many other
activities which are part of their culture. There are at least
fifteen tribes in Arizona, the counties are named after some of
them. Listing them wouldn't help, you have to meet them to see a
difference. BTW some of the tribes are still at war with others.
After several hundreds of years they haven't settled some of the
disputes. But being an Englishman you wouldn't know that in places
like Arizona, and southern California there are tribes right in
town. In Arizona nearly 15% of the state's land belongs to the
tribes and it's not possible to avoid knowing many of them as they
are integrated into the society.

: This is not a dig at American education because I am sure the
same applies
: to me, it's just that I can't see my gaps unless someone points
them out to
: me.

The gaps are just a lot of misinformation, but the eastern peoples
are less exposed to the tribes. The Seminoles are still at war
with the US.... Never signed a treaty!

That's exactly right, I recently went to South Africa and was asked several
times which shops I would recommend for someone visiting London. I have a
standard reply "I visit (insert current place name) more often than I go to
London" and it's true. I have been to london once in the last 35 years and
that was once too many.

Walz, you idiot. You've gone and excerpted the very part that you're
claiming to make a point with here.

Read my post again:
---------------<quote>-------------------------
So I asked, "So,

--------------<end quote>------------------------------------------

IOW, if you'd bother to read, I said that I "DID ... actually think
"The Weekly Reader" actually WAS" was (possibly) propaganda. But,
and this is something that it's been made clear repeatedly, thinking,
and questioning, are outside the realm of possibility for you and
your blindered robot ilk.

Your brainlock is showing again.

Try taking a look on the other side of your blinders. Or don't - it's
your choice.

Oh, wait! You don't have a choice! You're a servo completely at the
vagaries of circumstance.

Sorry.

OK, my ignorance is showing - have the Seminoles and the US ever

possible alternative?

Thanks,

They chased the Army out of Florida at one time. And despite many
being captured they have never agreed to end hostilities. But
fortunately for all of us, they haven't fallen to raiding lately.

Really, it's history....

You have now.
which, to me, seems absurd. It seems that all americans know about the
pilgrim fathers which in terms of the whole picture was a fairly

In what way? Seems like with just about everything, the first ones are
the ones that get the glory.
This is not a dig at American education because I am sure the same applies
to me, it's just that I can't see my gaps unless someone points them out to
me.

Duh. You can't know what you don't know. Nobody can.

As for being taught about native Americans, well, I remember being
taught about them in school. Not necessarily about all the tribes but
about some of the more common ones, such as Navajo and some of the
others in the western U.S. There are too many, so the emphasis was on
the ones that were here in California, especially the ones that were
involved with the Spanish Missions. Gabrieleno, Chumash, Ohlone, Miwuk,
just to name a few.

There could be more than one reason why the kids aren't taught more, one
being that they were treated shamefully. When I was in H.S. our history
teacher went to the library at UCLA, I believe it was, and checked out
old books from the mid 1800s and read selected paragraphs to us in
class. It showed now adversarial the situation was back then, with
settlers afraid they might get scalped by a 'savage'.

Anyway, that's enough of that, I said it just to prove that I've been
taught something, not to get any response from others, and I wouldn't
want anyone to reply thinking they would start an argument. This thread
has deteriorated to way past the point of the original topic that I
started. Damn, that really sucks.
