What's the difference between an Energizer, for example, and a Renewal
rechargeable battery in terms of the chemicals?

Quite a while ago, I called and asked; got a partial answer.
Seems they made a number of changes in the chemistry, the first
concerning the depolarizer, another change has something to do with
having an excess of something at (on?) the cathode (may have remembered
that incorrectly as it has been over a year, so could be at the anode),
and the third part was adding other chemicals (stabilizers?).

Certainly not a very good answer, but the best i have.

I usually get 20 or more charges of life/useage.
Depends on the service; the greater the current one draws, and the
deeper the discharge, the less total charges one should expect.

That sucks ... considering how much Renewal batteries cost ... plus you only
really charge 5% of the battery every time ... I think the reason they tell you
to recharge frequently is so you psychologically think you're getting more out
of the battery ... I don't think it's actually "recharging".

No; capacity seems to be relatively constant, but then drops fast near
the end.

Ah... but it does.
I have some D cells thati use in my radio; i previously used standard
alkaline.
20 times the cost of a standard alkaline set is a heck of a lot more
than a set of rechargeables.

[Blah-blah-blah from bozo who doesn't understand
the difference between a question mark and a period.]

So, RB, is it a linear degradation?

so which is cheaper per unit of energy? Renewal, NiCd, or NiMH?

Cannot say; have not tried NiMH batteries.
