Whatever happened to the Speech recognition chip?

I have been looking for a CMOS LSI speech recognition chip and I have been completely unsuccessful. Something that will communicate i2c or 1 wire or anything serial really. I have seen many datasheet PDF's and even project logs with parts call outs but whenever I Google the LSI chip the PDF or project refers to I am completely unable to find a source for the part. I have tried Mouser, Digikey etc. and even searching "speech recognition" yields only development kits that cost in excess of $150.00

I have seen articles written YEARS ago that refer to $15 40 word speaker dependent OR independent LSI CMOS chips that I can actually plug into a DIP socket. When I finally traced THAT chip to the MFGR their webpage was a big 404

Did you try Ebay? You can often find discontinued chips there.

Makes you wonder how accurate the chips were. The slightest error in recognition could be disastrous in many uses, so perhaps the chips didn't sell well?

SR-06 is pretty pricey at $137.85 and I am looking for a chip not a module.

When I tracked down the manufacturers website it was 404 and you can not find the HM2007 anywhere.

Also a module rather than a chip. I would love to work with a module if it was affordable but at 39$ how do I develop a consumer product out of that? I need a chip (or module) priced at $15 or less.

This final link is a $50 module that I am sure I would love to play with but I develop products for short production runs. I require chips or modules priced like them. I used to build and sell speech recognition modules in 1984 using LSI CMOS chips (don't ask I don't remember) that could do 20 user dependent or 5 user independent phrases. The chips cost me less than $6.00 apiece.

As for fleaBay there are the Chinese LD3320 modules on Ebay as low as $13.42 that do NOT tell you in the listing that they only recognize 2 dialects of CHINESE.

Nowadays embedded controllers are powerful enough to run the same algorithms your PC uses to recognize speech. And controller chips are dirt cheap. I may have to redevelop an old technology myself.
