The home theatre is a TELEFUNKEN THT-6000HDMIA.
Original video format is mostly FLV with a few AVI's.
PC uses VLC as media player, which plays all OK.
After burning to 4.7GB DVD-R blank DVD's, some AVI's play OK, while others have poor or no sound.
FLV's do not play or get recognised by THT-6000 player.
Used 16x burn-speed under Windows explorer drag/copy to disk (Win7U).

As my trial version of NCH VideoPad has expired, which alternative is recommended for conversion?

AVI is a container format which can encode audio and video data in different formats. You cannot recognize the required codec from the file name. Therefore two avi files may require different decoders to be rendered. Your home theater system may be able to decode some types of avi file, but not others.

You can use VLC to create DVDs in standard format which should be rendered by your home theater system without problems.
