Isn't EST and Edwards the same thing?
They've got several divisions. Some product lines seem to overlap. They
also OEM for lots of companies, including yours. Our app was written for
the FireShield line. These are entry level commercial fire alarms, the
bread and butter of many firms. When they approached me to do consulting
work on the project, they said they were under the gun due to changes in ULc
which would shortly make their then current line unusable in Canada. They
were short on time and I offered to relieve them of the software burden. It
was perfect for me since my online business wasn't doing as well as it is
now.
What they liked best was the portability of the app as we designed it. At
the heart of every downloader are three major pieces of programming.
There's the EEPROM map, a set of data rules (limits and cross-checks mainly)
and the communications module. The EEPROM map and the data rules can all be
soft-coded into the schema. Communicating with alarm panels is always
tricky. You do a lot of trial and error until you get it to talk. Once a
particular communication chip's behavior has been learned, the rest is easy.
Fortunately, manufacturers tend to use similar methods from one panel to the
next, so it's not that hard to do the next product line.
How much do you know about Synergy?
Synergy is an advanced system incorporating burg, fire, EVAC, access and
CCTV controls. The system requires much more than just a downloader.
Synergy software actively monitors and operates a whole suite of protective
services. Our program wasn't intended for that kind of application. It
could easily be used to DL any standard burg, fire or hybrid system though.
That's one of the strengths of XML. Once the modular structure is written
the app becomes whatever it wants to be.
