Hi Experts,

I am asking from Germany and English is not my native tongue.
So please be lenient toward me, if some of my expressions
make you laughing. Furthermore I hope I've taken the right
news-group as my problem is not very "scientific". If you have a
better suggestion, please e-mail me, but I cannot access to all
international NGs.

I am searching for a special part, I cannot purchase locally,
so I hope to find a supplier internationally.

I need a window in a front panel of a stainless steel 19 inch rack.
plate thickness = approx. 0.1 inch, glass thickness approx. = 0.2 inch
The window size will be approx. 5 inch x 4 inch and should be
made of a plastic material like Polycarbonate or Polyacrylate (Plexi).

Usually people purchase such a kind of a rack directly from the
rack supplier, with a cut-out, painted afterwards and a window
fixed from the rear side, using glue or specially welded screws.

In our case we are making individual boxes, and we don't know
where to place the cut-out beforehand, so we have to cut out
ourselves later on, and by the way spoiling the paint.

We are now (desperately) searching for a supplier for a plastic window
with a kind of a mounting frame, with the capabilities
- to fix itself to the front panel
- and cover the cutting edges,
prepared for mounting in 19 inch rack front panels.

If someone on the board knows any supplier please e-mail
me the web-site of the supplier.

Many thanks in advance

Best regards

Try this...

Replace the complete front panel with a transparent plastic panel.
Screen print the back of the panel with black or silver paint
Do not paint where you want a window!
You can also print lettering and company logo at the same time (print in
reverse)

If you have a problem with EMC - Fit a thin metal plate behind the plactic.
Cut a slightly larger window in the metal plate so you do not see the cut
edge.

Have you looked at suppliers for PC modding (modifying) equipment?
Some people like to cut holes in their PCs and stick windows in, so
there is a market for kits. They are probably not the right size for
you, but perhaps you could cut one in half or find out who supplies
the shop and go straight to the manufacturer.

Here is one supplier I found in Germany:

Look at PRODUKTGRUPPE > Modding.

If this is of an acrylic type window, you can try some of the large glass
companies where you are located. Many of them will do work with acrylic type
materials. They will cut it to your specifications. If you bring them the
frame, they will cut it to fit.

If there is any printing required on to the acrylic window, you can try some
of the professional printing companies. Many of them can do a process called
silk screening. It may be costly to do one or a few units, but in that case
you can make a few spares at the same time.

As for myself, I have bought a piece of acrylic or Plexiglas, and cut it
myself. I sanded the edges with a fine abrasive to make them smooth. I then
brought it to a local printer to have the silk screening done for the
letters and numbers. The printer charged me according to his hour rate for
doing the set-up.

My comment is according to my interpretation of your question.
