I've been away for a long time from circuit building and at that time there was two methods that I used one was Getting copper clad boards and chemicals to remove unwanted copper and leaving a copper circuit.

The easier one was the Wire wrap and I used it alot. It had elongated legs on IC sockets and a tool that received the stripped section of a thin wire and you placed it on the elongated leg and twisted clockwise and it made very good contact.

I wonder if anyone still uses Wire wrap anymore and if parts are still available. The following parts are necessary for this type of circuit
IC sockets with Wire wrap posts
Special wire that fits wrap tool
Wrap tool
Pin out insert to show pin layout from underneath (not necessary but nice)

I would appreciate any advice before I start using this method and not be able to finish it
I still have the tool and some wire and sockets
Thanks for reading this .....colum

Write wrap wire is easily obtainable.

The tools are available if you know where to look.

The sockets after becoming more and more rare.

If you've got the stuff, go for it. If you were starting out I'd probably not recommend it.

Thanks Steve. Its a shame that the sockets are getting rare, I found you could not reuse them because you rounded off the posts that had a square shape to grab the wire....colum

Its a shame that the sockets are getting rare,

electronics has moved on a long way in the last 30 years, that's how long it has been since I last needed to do wire wrap terminations .... in a telephone exchange

I get most of my wire wrap supplies from Digi-Key:

IC Sockets
Wire Wrap Wire
Wrapping Tools
Perf Board
Pins for Discrete Components

I've also had fairly good luck finding wire wrap stuff on Amazon.com.

@colum,

What kind of circuits are you going to build?
Analog,Digital?

What kind of technology and speed/frequency?

What kind of packages are you planning to use?
