With Respect to Grounding in Computers

I am aware that a ground loop can form when you have two or more
computers or peripherals plugged in at different sockets and connected
by a cable (be that RS232 or what have you; anything that conducts
electricity). Very bad.

So my question is: how is this dealt with? Must the electronics inside
the chassis be connected to mains Earth? Would it be possible to exclude
that and perhaps use the chassis as a ground plane? (I may be ignorant
about electronics and not talking sense, but I understand that the
chassis is used as a ground plane in lieu of actual Earth ground in car
electronics) Tell me if I am wrong on any account as I am trying to
learn electronics; they are something that have been on my mind and I
think my knowledge of computers is insufficient if I don't know about
their most fundamental principles)

In that case, it would be possible to implement a floating ground
(AFAIK, where common in all units is separate from mains Earth) or a
single-point dealie where only one unit (again AFAIK) is connected at
mains Earth. Note that I'm not talking about lifting the Earth
altogether, that's terribly dangerous, I know that much.

If not, then what dyou do?
