Altium Partners with IHS Markit to Address Key Challenge for Design Engineers

August 14, 2020 by Luke James

Altium has recently announced its partnership with IHS Markit Electronic Parts Solutions to help engineers deal with end-of-life callouts for components.

In early July, Altium, a provider of PC-based electronics design software for design engineers, announced its partnership with IHS Market Electronic Parts Solutions (IHS Markit), a London-based data and information services company, to address the end-of-life design challenges that currently plagues the electronics industry.

A Routine Design Challenge

One thing that most, if not all, design engineers have experienced at least once in their careers is an end-of-life notice for a critical component that they planned to use in a new product or design. With, what is according to IHS itself, around 15 end-of-life notices issued each day, part obsolescence is a challenge that design engineers routinely face, and it can cause both the design and production phases to suffer lengthy and costly delays.

This is the challenge that Altium, in partnership with IHS Markit, hopes to address. As the world’s most accurate component intelligence source, which provides lifecycle status updates during the printed circuit board (PCB) design process, IHS Markit and its bill of materials analysis provides the current lifecycle status for more than 660 million electronic components.

Altium’s chief operating officer, Ted Pawela, commented that PCB designers need to understand whether the components they specify are going to be available for their products’ full lifecycles. By partnering with IHS, Altium hopes to make reliable component lifecycle data and recommended substitutes seamlessly available to design engineers as they design (rather than after they have designed).

A Connected Experience for PCB Design

As part of this partnership, IHS Markit’s part and supply chain intelligence are integrated with Altium 365, the world’s only cloud platform for PCB design that works harmoniously with the industry standard for PCB design, Altium Designer. This delivers the most connected experience for PCB design and manufacturing.

Bob Braasch, IHS Markit’s vice president, said that by using lifecycle information and alternative part options from IHS, users of Altium’s 365 and Designer products can ensure successful supply chain continuity at any point in the PCB design cycle, long before any potential issues arise that relate to end-of-life issues.

Thanks to this partnership, users of Altium 365 Pro can access IHS Markit’s technology from within the Altium Designer’s Manufacturer Part Search panel for access to up-to-date component lifecycles, alternative part options, and other relevant information.
