Boost Efficiency for Automative Design with Coilcraft High-Temperature Shielded Power Inductors

June 11, 2019 by Sam Holland

Coilcraft introduces new XAL 7050 series shielded power inductors with 22 to 47 µH inductance values and current ratings up to 5.5 Amps.

The high-temperature inductors measure 7.2 x 7.5 x 5.0mm and are among Coilcraft’s ultra-small, ultra-efficient power inductors that stand out for their low DCR per mm3, rugged mechanical construction, and soft saturation characteristics.

The XAL 7050 series are built using wire wound construction and deliver high performance in the smallest possible space.

The XAL 7050 Series: Features

  • High inductance, up to 47 µH.

  • The XAL 7050 series is AEC-Q200 Grade 1, which makes them suitable for most 'under the hood' uses as they can withstand temperatures in the −40°C to 125°C temperature range. The maximum part temperature is 165°C (ambient + temperature rise).

  • Features a rugged, composite construction that is necessary for magnetic shielding and keeps audible buzzing at a minimum.

  • Handles up to 5.5A and features an operating voltage of 0V to 55V.

  • No thermal ageing issues, which makes it a suitable component for use in motor vehicles and other hardwearing applications.

  • Soft saturation characteristics that enable the endurance of high current spikes.

  • Low DC resistance (60 moms) for greater efficiency.

  • RoHS compliant: It has an RoHS compliant tin-silver over copper. Coilcraft offers other types of terminations for anyone willing to pay extra.

  • Weighs 1.50 to 1.55g and offers 260°C maximum reflow temperature.

The XAL 7050 series has a lower-profile counterpart, the XAL 7030 series, which has an identical footprint—low DC resistance, soft saturation, composite construction, and AEC-Q200 Grade 1—but with lower inductance values (0.16 to 10µH).

The XAL 7050 Series: Applications

Due to a combination of high current handling, low DCR, and soft saturation, XAL 7050 series power inductors are well suited for VRM/VRD applications.

Typically, having low DCR and high inductance means that they can be used for voltage regulator modules (VRM) and DC/DC conversion applications in electronics like automotive systems, personal navigation systems, personal multimedia devices, desktop computers, graphics cards, portable gaming devices, mobile devices, and servers.

The components can also be used in power supplies (to stabilise the voltages required by the processor/elements), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and distributed power systems.

When used on computer motherboards, for example, the role of these components as VRM would be to sense the computer’s microprocessor voltage requirements and to make sure the correct voltage is maintained.

For this reason, the XAL 7050 series power inductors will make it possible for processors with varying voltages to be added to the same motherboard: the inductors can be soldered onto the motherboard, or they can be socketed into a slot designed for modular voltage regulators.

In motor vehicle alternators and power station generator facilities, the XAL 7050 series power inductors may be used to control the output of the facility. They may also be used in an electric power distribution system where they can be installed along distribution lines or at a substation to make sure consumers get steady voltage.

These power inductors can withstand these harsh environments because they have no thermal ageing issues, and they are perfect for high-temperature applications. Overall, the XAL 7050 series is a great example of the attractive combination of ultra-small and ultra-efficient features among power inductors.
