Siemens Enhances MultiMech Software — A Tool Enabling Designers to Virtually Predict Failure in Materials

Siemens has recently added materials modeling to Simcenter through its acquisition of MultiMechanics and its proprietary TRUE Multiscale simulation technology.

Siemens announced in mid-November that it had signed an agreement to acquire MultiMechanics Inc., a developer of its own MultiMech finite element software that enables companies to predict failure in advanced materials with speed and accuracy. 

Siemens plans to integrate MultiMechanics into its Siemens Digital Industries Software. This will add the ability for Siemens customers to create a digital twin of materials by integrating materials engineering with design, performance engineering, and manufacturing through TRUE Multiscale technology

MultiMech Integrated with Simcenter 3D

MultiMech helps companies efficiently and accurately predict material properties and behavior, including the likeliness of failure at the microstructural level. This is due to be incorporated into Simcenter software that forms part of Siemens’ Xcelerator product portfolio which implements materials engineering into the digital workflow. 

By integrating MultiMech with Simcenter, Siemens is able to offer a complete end-to-end workflow tool that allows designers to meet rapidly changing consumer preferences with insights and data. Siemens’ acquisition expands the ability for designers to create the most comprehensive digital twin by integrating structural CAE with detailed modeling through TRUE Multiscale for a broad range of materials. 

As the digital twin of materials can watch for imperfections and manufacturing variability, highlight the cause of material failure, and optimize material microstructure for optimal performance, the design process can be sped up without sacrifice. 

Jan Leuridan, Senior Vice President, Simulation & Test Solutions, Siemens, said, "The addition of this technology enables our customers to build a digital twin of materials, which will help to shrink the innovation cycle of new products and materials, possibly saving millions of dollars and several years in development and certification in aerospace, automotive and other sectors," 


Siemens’ Acquisition

Siemens’ acquisition of MultiMechanics was signed on the same day as their announcement, 15 November 2019. The acquisition is due to close and be finalized by the end of November.

Although specific terms of the agreement and transaction have not been disclosed by Siemens, it is widely believed that it was motivated almost entirely by Siemens’ desire to improve on MultiMech software with Simcenter and provide a comprehensive end-to-end solution for its customers.
