SYSGO and STMicroelectronics Jointly Develop Platform for Secure Vehicle Connectivity

December 28, 2019 by Luke James

STMicroelectronics has recently announced a collaboration with SYSGO to demonstrate secure telematics solutions for the automotive market at CES 2020. The jointly developed Automotive Secure Gateway is based on ST’s Telemaco3P system-on-chip (SoC).

STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader that serves a broad range of customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, and SYSGO, a European leader in real time operating systems (RTOS) for embedded systems, have announced their cooperation and plans to demonstrate secure telematics solutions for the automotive market at CES 2020, due to be held in January.

The Jointly Developed Automotive Secure Gateway (ASG)

Based on ST’s Telemaco3P system-on-chip, a specialized automotive processor for secure telematics and connectivity, the jointly developed Automotive Secure Gateway also uses SYSGO’s PikeOS hypervisor-based RTOS, bringing avionics-grade safety and security to the market.

ST’s Telemaco3P platform provides a cost-effective solution for ensuring a secure and stable connection between the vehicle and the cloud. It is built upon powerful application processes, as well as an independent CAN control subsystem with optimized power management and asymmetric multi-core architecture. Thanks to its ISO 26262 silicon design, automotive-grade qualification up to 105 °C ambient temperature, and embedded Hardware Security Module, developers can implement a wide range of telematics applications that support over-the-air firmware upgrades and high-throughput wireless connectivity.

The ASG benefits from extended secure telematics through the use of PikeOS, an RTOS that encapsulates all communications channels and all applications in individual partitions, using a positive-security concept that stops individual partitions from communicating with one another unless explicitly whitelisted by the developer. This strict separation safeguards against malfunctions and malicious attacks, preventing them from impacting software running in partitions other than the one that has been originally affected.

At present, PikeOS is the only RTOS certified to Common Criteria (EAL 3+) and has been used in a range of critical safety and security applications in automotive, railway, and avionics to date.

The ASG also implements a comprehensive security front that includes a virtualized firewall, intrusion detection, fast and secure boot capabilities, and over-the-air updates. It also supports secure cloud communications using LTE, Wi-Fi ®, Bluetooth ®, Ethernet, and CAN within the car.

Demonstrating ASG at CES 2020

At CES 2020, ST and SYSGO will demonstrate how the ASG can successfully detect and mitigate over-the-air attacks.

Luca Rodeschini, General Manager Automotive and Discrete Group strategist at STMicroelectronics, said, “Secure telematics are a main building block of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and security certification will become a major issue for OEMs and suppliers alike. In addition to their technology, SYSGO has a tremendous certification expertise, and we are glad to work with them to achieve the next step towards certifiable automotive solutions."

SYSGO’s VP of Marketing and Alliances, Franz Walkembach, stated, “STMicroelectronics has been a pioneer in automotive safety and security, and we are proud to work with them to supply solid telematics solutions for next-generation vehicles.”

ASG will be demonstrated on the Automotive Grade Linux showcase in the Smart City exhibition and in SYSGO’s hospitality suite in the Westgate Hotel.
