The new UltraScale+ MPSoCs (Multiprocessor system on chips) extends Xilinx's existing SoCs to enable true heterogeneous multi-processing for smarter systems.

The new Zynq UltraScale+ multiprocessor SoCs from Xilinx combine a high-performance Arm-based multicore system with application-specific integrated circuit, aka ASIC-class programmable logic.

Targeting 'smarter systems', such as 5G wireless and automotive advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), the architecture for these UltraScale multiprocessors is based on TSMC's 16FinFET+ process technology. It builds upon the success of the Zynq-7000 family of SoCs by extending Xilinx's SoCs to enable "true heterogeneous multi-processing with the right engines for the right tasks", to quote Xilinx.

The Zynq UltraScale+ Multiprocessor SoCs from Xilinx

The family of Zynq UltraScale+ multiprocessor SoCs (MPSoCs) includes the following 3 variants—CG, EG, and EV—that include either 2 or 4 Arm Cortex-A53 cores and 2 Arm Cortex-R5 real-time processing units. This is following Xilinx's partnership with Arm, which has enabled Xilinx to provide the most efficient 64-bit ARMv8 application processors.

First up, the CG Zynq MPSoCs are optimised for industrial motor control and sensor fusion. Following the CG MPSoCs are the EG and EV series, which include 4 Cortex-A53 cores and an Arm Mali-400 graphics processing unit (GPU)—with the EV series also featuring a video codec unit that supports H.265 HEVC and H.264 AVC standards. This makes them ideal for use in ADAS, surveillance, and multimedia applications.

Zynq UltraScale+ CG

These SoCs feature a heterogeneous processing system that includes a dual-core Cortex-A53 and a dual-core Cortex-R5. Alongside 16 nm FinFET+ programmable logic, these devices are optimised for both industrial motor control and the industrial IoT.

Zynq UltraScale+ EG

These SoCs feature a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 platform that runs up to 1.5GHz. They are combined with Cortex-R5 real-time processors and a Mali-400 MP2 GPU, alongside 16 nm FinFET+ programmable logic. These are ideal for use in the next generation of both wired and wireless 5G infrastructure.

These SoCs build on top of the EG platform and add on an integrated H.264 and H.265 video codec that can encode and decode up to 60 frames per second. They are designed with HD video in mind, as per their said suitability for ADAS, surveillance, and multimedia.

In summary, the SoCs' architecture includes:

  • 64-bit Quadcore ARM Cortex-A53 processors
  • Dual-core ARM Cortex-R5 real-time processors
  • Arm Mali-400MP graphics processor
  • DDR4/LPDDR4 memory interface support
  • Compatibility with the Zync-7000 SoCs
