ElectroSpark is an innovation-driven startup dedicated to delivering robust, field-ready electronics and technology for mission-critical applications. ElectroSpark’s BioTech division specializes in transformative healthcare solutions built for the world’s most challenging environments. By combining cutting-edge research with rugged, scalable device engineering, ElectroSpark BioTech empowers medical teams and humanitarian responders to address urgent health needs, even where infrastructure is minimal or absent.
ElectroSpark Vitalis
In the world’s most unforgiving environments—war zones, disaster sites, and remote areas—access to reliable medical diagnostics is often the difference between life and death. ElectroSpark Vitalis is a revolutionary, fully modular multi-sensor vital signs monitoring system purpose-built for resource-limited settings. Combining advanced biomedical sensors with a rugged, power-independent platform, Vitalis empowers frontline healthcare workers, medics, and humanitarian responders to triage and monitor patients when traditional medical infrastructure is nonexistent or destroyed.
Vitalis simultaneously measures heart rate, oxygen saturation (SpO₂), electrocardiogram (EKG), body temperature, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, delivering critical health data in real time. Multi-modal charging options—solar panels, USB-C, and manual hand crank—ensure uninterrupted operation even in the absence of external power. Data is transmitted securely to base hospitals or coordination centers via GSM SMS, with RF Morse code as a fail-safe backup.
Design Philosophy: Comfort, Safety, and Forward Compatibility
User comfort and patient safety are at the core of Vitalis. This is exemplified by the choice of respiratory monitoring: instead of restrictive or intrusive chest sensors, Vitalis employs a medical-grade MPX5010DP pressure sensor with a nasal cannula connected by a flexible trachea-like tube. This non-intrusive setup minimizes discomfort and risk, making it ideal even for trauma patients—and, crucially, this trachea tubing not only emulates natural airway paths but also future-proofs the device for potential low-power ventilator support and other respiratory-assist modules.
Equally important is the rigorous electronic design that underpins Vitalis’s reliability and precision. All printed circuit boards (PCBs) in the system are carefully designed as either 2-layer or 4-layer boards, optimized for high-frequency data transfer with minimal noise interference. Unbroken ground and power planes are employed where necessary to maintain signal integrity and reduce electromagnetic interference. Additionally, stitching vias are strategically placed and kept unbroken to ensure robust grounding and minimize crosstalk and parasitic coupling between signal lines. These PCB design principles ensure that Vitalis operates with exceptionally low noise and high data fidelity—critical factors for accurate biomedical sensing in challenging field environments.
Robust Architecture for Extreme Conditions
- Dual-MCU Core: Vitalis is driven by both an 8-bit PIC18F57Q43 (with hardware Configurable Logic Block/CLB) for real-time sensor management and a 32-bit STM32L431CBT6 for power-efficient high-level processing, communications, and data handling. This separation of duties ensures reliable, energy-efficient operation.
- Advanced Interface: A dedicated ESP32-S3 runs a responsive, multilingual 7” TFT capacitive touchscreen (800×480), handling all GUI and touch tasks independently. The ESP32-S3 supports TensorFlow Lite/Micro, enabling on-device TinyML/AI for real-time error reduction, anomaly detection, and adaptive UI enhancements. The system learns and improves over time, even in disconnected environments.
Modular Hot-Swappable Smart Sensors
Each sensor module (EKG, SpO₂, temperature, etc.) is physically and electrically isolated and features:
- An onboard ATtiny MCU for local preprocessing, auto-recognition, and safe hot-swapping
- A dedicated local voltage regulator for robust, independent operation
- Auto-detection and seamless configuration via the host’s CLB, enabling instant plug-and-play with no downtime
Special Feature Example:
The EKG module integrates an ADXL345 accelerometer/gyroscope and an ADuCM360 mixed-signal MCU for sophisticated motion artifact rejection, ensuring ECG accuracy even under adverse conditions.
What Vitalis Delivers
- Accurate, safe vital-sign monitoring: heart rate, SpO₂, EKG (with motion artifact rejection), temperature, blood pressure, and non-intrusive respiratory rate via nasal cannula and MPX5010DP (with expansion-ready tubing for future ventilation support)
- Intelligent, user-friendly UI: 7” ESP32-S3 touchscreen with icon-driven, multilingual interface and built-in AI for smart notifications and learning
- Extreme field readiness: 10+ hours operation on 7.4V 10,000mAh lithium-ion batteries, rugged IP65 construction, easily sanitized, impact/shock- and weather-resistant
- Secure, adaptive, and connected: Encrypted onboard logging, dependable communications, modular sensors for easy field upgrade, service, and expansion
The Power of the CLB: Seamless Modularity and Expandability
The PIC18F57Q43’s Configurable Logic Block (CLB) enables true modularity by providing:
- Real-time, hardware-level custom logic for rapid sensor detection, signal routing, and protocol translation—even updating “on the fly” for new sensor types or protocols
- Sensor module handshakes, multiplexing, and interrupt handling, all offloaded from the main CPUs for maximum system reliability and energy efficiency
- The ability to integrate new sensor modules or medical functions (like low-power ventilators) with only minimal logic or firmware changes—future-proofing the Vitalis ecosystem
ElectroSpark Vitalis—designed and engineered by ElectroSpark BioTech—represents a new standard in for rugged, patient-centric diagnostic technology on the world’s frontlines, modular and future-ready for both current needs and the evolving frontline of crisis medicine.
