IrDA on a microcontroller

Dear ng,

I am considering using IrDA to interface my application to a PC (rather than
serial comms). Has anyone any experience in doing such a thing? I guess
I'm interested to know if it's practical; I've looked at the various
protocols that control IrDA and I think I'm trying to emulate IrCOMM.

I'm considering using a PIC18 but if any controller had some kind of
pre-built library, that would be great.

TIA.

Take a look there:

Some of the chips have integrated protocol handler and can emulate
IrCOMM, I think. I dosn't them yet, but read something about.

Zilog Encore chips have it built in, and the $39.00 development kit boards have
the optics installed too.
