Hi,

I'm planning to buy an LCD character display (with LED backlight) from
Digikey. They carry Optrex, Varitronix, and Lumex brands. Looking at the
prices and specs in the catalog, they look pretty equal. I don't know how
they compare. Has anyone here had any experience with one or more of these
brands of LCD character displays? I can't decide which one to buy. Help...

If you're not looking for exact specs (such as connector or mounting
hole placement) you may be able to find a much better deal from the
vendors that carry odd-lot and surplus displays. You'll probably spend
half (or less) than from Digikey, although you'll typically be limited
to the "standard" display types (no colored background, etc.).

The Hitachi 44780 controller (or equivalent) is almost universal on
small character displays, so the interface that works with one will work
with any.

Try www.mjpa.com and www.allelectronics.com for a couple of sites.
