you must work on different gear

in domestic electronics it is VERY common, 60 - 75% would be a fair percentage
and they fail quite happily on their own WITHOUT any prompting from any of your 3 reasons
replace the caps and it works again immediately without any other component replacements

I was answering this question(reply #11), about controller or a processor chip:
"How often do you do the obvious repairs only to find that a controller or processor chips is toast?",Not the cap issue.

I'll post it again for clarity:

It is quite rare.
In cases it does happen it is very likely that the all board is toasted.
That mostly happens because of :
1.Mains power surge.
2.Power supply failure,such that creates a VCC above ICs max absolute value.
3.Lightning.

Dave; Are you saying 60-75% IC failure, or Cap failure?
Dork seems to be of the position that IC failure is rare, and you disagree?

Sorry, my post started with a rough guess that 75% cap failure, but then I ask how often do you end up dead in the water with a failed (unidentified) IC.

Given the fact that power surges and ps failures happen quite often, I would think processor failures would also be a common problem.

Not really John,
PS failures can simply refuse to start the circuit. Lightening strike can burn a whole board. Routers are good for burning up in a storm.
Surges are normally sorted by mov's or ptc/ntc's. And fuses. But nothing is 100% fool proof.

yeah the problem was that you didn't specifically say what you were responding to ... it lead to the confusion
in future just quote what you are responding to instead of the whole post
