Sony Wega fading to red, then losing picture

This is an intermittent problem with my 32" Wega (KV32FS100.) After a
period of watching, the picture will start to fade in and out to red.
The red never totally takes over, but will kind of pulse in and out.
Sometimes, it'll do that three or four times, then go away. Other
times, and more frequently now, it'll do that, then lose most of the
picture, going to a purplish-blue pic with diagnoal lighter lines. You
can still see the source picture faintly behind that, but it's not
watchable. Once it's done that, switching inputs will sometimes fix
the trouble, sometimes for the rest of the night, but sometimes only
for a couple minutes. Powering off seems to fix it as well, though I
haven't given it time to see if leaving it off longer keeps the
problem away longer.

Last hint, when this problem occurs and I power down, I see the
"Stand-by" light flashing. It flashes five times, pauses then repeats.

Assuming I'm going to bring a tech in to fix this, what things should
I tell him to look for? Up to this point, I've really liked this set,
and any help you can offer will be much appreciated. TIA!

First of all, if the set is out of warranty, call the Sony authorized
service, unless you are sure that the tech who comes is very experienced and
knowledgeable about Sony sets. They are complex to troubleshoot.

The first things I would verify is the performance of the high voltage
multiplier, high voltage regulation, biases and drives to the CRT elements,
and if there are any variations of the video signal levels to the CRT.

I would be careful about advising an experienced tech. He should know what
to do. Just tell him what you observe, and let him take from there. These
guys work on these sets all day for a living. If he is a Sony tech from
their authorized service department, he will know the set well, and have the
support of the manufacture to service your set.

A little tip. Make a warranty claim for the picture tube and be prepared to
give your TV's serial number to the authorized Sony service center in your area
or closest vicinity. Apparently, there was a defect with Sony TVs in that the
wrong pix tubes were installed. The symptom includes excessive red push before
failure. Affected TVs will have serial numbers that will identify a TV set
that is covered under what I consider a secret recall. A little info from a
local electronics repair shop that is authorized to work on Sony equpiment.

Thanks. I'll mostly keep my mouth shut around a tech, but I like to
know at least a little, to make sure I'm not getting the run around.
Purchased about 8 months ago, the set is under parts warranty, but out
of labor warranty. Not sure if that means I have to bring it in myself
or not. The Sony site is telling me they don't offer in-house service
in this area, but that there are local authorized service centers who
might. I'll call one tomorrow. Thanks again!

Thanks much. This is why I love Usenet!

Arrgh. The authorized Sony center in my area said they won't schedule
an inhouse call for 4 weeks. If I bring it in myself, they think they
can get to it within a week. I guess we'll be watching the Christmas
shows in the basement.

Maybe you could go to Wal Mart and buy a cheap set and return it once you
get yours fixed, probably the best use of that place.

Lugging a 32 inch Sony Vega is no fun at all. Those suckers are heavy! -

.........if you think a WalMart TV will really last the whole week he needs.....
