Hi ! The legs of this capacitor broke off while replacing another part in some old speaker crossover, I checked the color code and got 1.5pf, is this correct ? and does it make sense in this kind of application ? cause I cant seem to find a replacement. Thank you !

no :)

Regards, Dana.

as per Dana's colour coding it's brown green green .... note the extra width of the green band indicating that
the 2nd digit and the 3rd digit ( the multiplier ) are both green

so --- 1, 5, and 5 zeros and value is in pF = 1,500,000 pF = 1.5 uF

white band = 10% tolerance
red band = 250V

For Future reference capacitors come in all flavors but you must be careful in your case for audio crossover Network a ceramic capacitor would not be ideal this is only to show the value of the capacitance itself and how it can be interchanged, your new polystyrene or Teflon would more likely have the same codes or not depends on the manufacturer.

Nice charts.
I might have to print some.

Don't do it! I tried. I can't get it to stop... I'm going to unplug the darn thing.
Sorry everybody. Stupid phone.

Pelican capacitors. Old manufacture. I recall using them in the 1970's......

1.5uF and 250V as above. Well known for losing their end wires. Polyester in construction and modern components are smaller (physically) plus have more robust wire terminations.

Replace 1 for 1 value/voltage-wise. They are remarkably reliable IN-CIRCUIT but, as you have discovered, prone to damage if messed with.

Collectors items if you have a 'supply' of them.

I've heard that expression too. Depends on how old you are I suppose - could also be a cultural thing.
