At work, our benevolent union decided that a good way to support our
troops in Iraq would be to send them batteries. They designated a
collector at the various camuses, and requested that members buy a pack
or more and donate them to the union for later shipment to the troops.

I've been pondering whay they chose this particular item. Batteris are
not the best thing to ship over there because they tend to leak, in hot
weather, especially. And the post office doesn't think it's a good idea
to send chemicals thru the mail. And I'm still wondering how they are
going to arbitrarily choose whom they will send them to. And judging
from my experience when I was in the army, batteries are an expendable
item, and there are always plenty of them around, even tho they are O.D.
(military talk for olive green, AKA mil spec batteries). Why not choose
something else, like walkman headphones, or some other expendable item
that is used a lot? One may never know; it may remain a mystery
forever.

I agree. Batteries need to be shipped by the pallet load, by
freight. They should just collect money and give it to a local group
that helps the families of your local servicemen and women. A lot of
emergencies arise while they are overseas, and the peace of mind would
be worth much more than a load of batteries. The Marion County Florida
Sheriff's office collected a few thousand used bullet proof vests for
solders to add protection to their vehicles but the military refused to
accept them, or allow them to be shipped overseas. They are sitting in
a warehouse while they figure out what to do with them.

Here is a copy of a post I made a few days ago on another newsgroup:

After years of discussion, the Marion County School Board decided to
name a new school to be built this year after a local soldier who gave
his life to save his fellow soldiers in 1969. The Hammett L. Bowen Jr.
school to open next year.

I was at the Marion County School Board meeting last night. It was
standing room only as people made their feelings known about the name of
the new school.

Yep. Why not just send them something they can really use, like
discharge papers and a trip home????

Maybe someone is going to extract the lithium and make up a nice batch
of crystal meth.
