DSC Power 832 problem

Can anyone help with this DSC Power 832 problem? (PC5010 control panel)

Keypad is a LCD5501Z unit.

I powered up the system for the first time last night and was trying to
assign the keypad to a slot. I was able to enter the installer code
and get into programming but it was responding as expected so I
exited and was going to try again.

Now, the trouble light is on and I can't get the keypad to respond to any
input.
I tried powering the system off and on but the trouble lite stays on and
still no response.
*2 does not display any trouble conditions.

Thanks in advance,
jay

You've likely assigned the keypad to partition 2 which is not enabled on
your main control. To get the keypad back press and hold the # key for two
seconds, the keypad will go blank, then press and hold key 1 for two
seconds, the keypad will now display normally for long enough to get you
back into programming to reassign the keypad back to partition one.

Let me know if that does the trick.

That got me back in. Thank you very much! And how about that response
time.. 13 minutes!

The keypad wasn't assigned to a different partition but after a little bit
of playing I now see
what happened. It reports a trouble condition and if you press the *2 it
will display the codes.
But if you don't do anything, it eventually locks up and doesn't respond
until the # 1 trick.

These manuals are definitely not written for the DIY crowd. Thanks Reg.

I'm still betting you have the keypad assigned to partition 2...either that
or it's defined as a global keypad. What's happening when you're using the
"#1 trick" you're temporarily changing the default keypad partition
assignment. When left untouched it reverts back to the global or assigned
partition. This would explain why it works following the #1, but then flips
back to the other partition. It's not locking up, it's just going back into
the mode that you programmed as default.

Performing the following programming sequence will reset it to partition one
slot 1:
* 8 [master code] 000 0 11
If you don't want to use slot 1 change the last digit to the slot of your
choice. BTW you only need to change the default slot number if you have
multiple keypads and you want to use the keypad zones or enable supervision.
In any other scenario the default keypad programming will be fine.

Glad you got back up and running.

You're right. I must have defined it as global. I found the part in the
manual
about the # 1 and after reading what that does I was able to clue in to the
global vs.
assigned partition concept. I programmed the keypad to partition 1 - slot
8.
(Instructions say to assign the LCD5500Z keypads to slot 8.) and it's
working now.

Now my problem is I don't have access to a telephone line where I mounted
the panel
right now. Is there no way to get around this? I would expect there must
be some way
to set up a system without a phone line. It seems as though I can't do any
other programming
until all trouble conditions are resolved and the phone line causing a
trouble code.

The telephone trouble is caused because TLM is enabled by default. Change
programming section 015 - LED 7 to off. That should clear your trouble.

Most troubles should not limit your programming ability so you may have
something else messed up.

Thanks again. That did the trick.
And you're right the trouble was not causing the problem with programming.
I was keying in the wrong code. Not being familiar with all the terms makes
programming this system a little tricky.
And stupid me was concerned about the wiring being the hard part...
