Hitachi Big-screen Picture Problem

I am looking for some help understanding this problem.

I have a 3 year old Hitachi Ultravision 53SBX59, 53" rear projection
TV that has developed a severe problem with the picture. The sides of
the picture are bowed in and the top and bottom are bowed out. Also,
there appears to be a convergence problem which looks worse with some
images than others. Text on the cable company's program guide is
almost un-readable but a regular image just looks fuzzy. I see a 1"
blue border on the right of the distorted image and a green border on
the left. I have tried the Magic Focus which terminates early with a
"3" displayed on the top right of the picture.

I would like to get an idea of what kind of problem and repair cost I
am looking at, so I can decide what to do with it. It cost over $2000
new.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

There are some parts failing in the pin amp and or convergence section.
Many times it is a number of capacitors. The best way to fix this is to use
an ESR meter to check all the caps in these areas to start with. In sets
that are a number of years old, it is common to find a number of bad caps.
Once all the bad caps are weeded out and replaced, if there are still
problems, then the circuits will have to be troubleshooted to locate the
exact parts, and change them.

I would suggest you call in an authorized service tech to properly service
your set. Using a TV set with a fault condition is not recommended. If
more parts fail, there is a chance something can go wrong and cause more
damage, thus increasing the cost of servicing the set.
