If the compressor is running but not working it is possible that the system has leaked and gas has been lost. Most refrigerators have a sealed system but loss of gas is common in air conditioning systems in cars where the drive is through a rotating shaft.

Does the compressor run continuously, or does it seem to cycle on and off? If cycling, how long does it stay on/off?

Did you check the accumulated dust and grime coating the heat-exchange coils, usually on the back (some on the bottom of the fridge?
Cleaning those coils may go a long way in solving your problem.

Most refrigs use a thermistor near the compressor that heats up under current flow to the compressor and changes resistance. This thermistor looks like a thick disc that is very fragile and breaks easily and is generally inside a cover or housing. It's made of carbon and fits between 2 spring contacts. If it is broken or cracked, that may be your problem. Ensure that you replace it with a like item with the same resistance. Ed.

If your fridge isn't cooling but the light's on and the compressor's running, here's what to do:

Check thermostat settings
Clean coils
Ensure airflow
Inspect door seal
Check fan
Defrost if needed
Ensure condenser fan works, and inspect compressor.

If no luck, seek professional help.
