Sony Cassette deck tc-fx 210 broke

Bought one of these decks today from a thrift store, and wouldn't you know it, it doesn't work. Well, most of the functions work, except for the play function. When I hit play it lurches and skips forward and the sound is completely inaudible. Where would I start looking to see what the problem is?

Hi Johnnynotdead,
My first suggestion would be to open the unit up and check the drive belts do they slip as the tape lunges? Also clean the heads and pinch roller using a cotton swab and some iprosol alcohol. Sometimes the belts perish or stretch with age and this stops the deck from working properly. If you can't find replacements take out the old belts and measure them deducting 5-10 percent for stretching and order some new ones these are readily available on the web from CPC, Maplins and Vintage electronics.
