My wife has been having problems with her portable CD player for
awhile and I have looked at it once and had it partially apart to look
for problems. Window doesn't show numbers; volume sometimes is full
blast and can't be turned down; sometimes it can't be turned off. It
has to either be the circuit board behind the front cover or the flex
circuit that runs from that board to the processor board. I am
betting on the flex circuit. Anyone who can shed any light on this?
Thanks for any help.

Sony's which have the buttons etc on the lid have notorious problems with
the flex connector at the rear hinge.

Time to replace the player, I would say.
