Hi,

Question from someone who knows nothing about this kind of thing.

I have a Yamaha CDX 810 CD player. It has been a great servant but is
starting to show its age. Any CD I try to play does not track
correctly on Track 1 - skips badly, jumps back to the start of the
disc, etc etc. Occassionally Track 2 is also affected, but never
later tracks. Tracks 3 and onward play beautifully. This seems to
happen regardless of what CD I try to play.

Just wondering what causes this behaviour and if it's likely to be an
expensive repair. Wondering if, in this day and age, it might be more
economical to buy a new CD player - attached though I am to the
Yamaha.

Thanks in advance,

David

It's either misalignment or grunge on the laser. If there are any
smokers in the house it's likely to be the latter.

Carefully clean the laser with a lint-free wipe soaked in isopropyl
alcohol. You can even get such wipes already impregnated from a medical
supplier.

Thanks for that Rob and Pussynuts - very encouraging to hear it looks
like a cheap (or even free) repair.

Thanks,

My 2 cents worth is that the spindle motor might be a bit erratic.
That is a common affliction of Yamaha CD players of that vintage...
