Audio Compressor

Looking for a bit of help on a project I've been thinking about for some time. At work we often times use walkie-talkies and a common problem is we will have one person who talks quietly into the mic, another who is very loud, and another who is a bit of a wild card. As a result you'll end up constantly reaching for your volume control, sometimes in a bit of a panic, as someone starts yelling into the mic after the quiet talker.

I was hoping to build a small battery powered audio compressor that the walkie could run through. I've searched google quite a bit, but haven't been able to make sense of much.

Is this feasible? Any guidance to get started would be great. Thanks.
