When I did repairs, I found the bulk of VCR problems were dirty tape heads and/or worn belts. Search google "how to clean VCR heads" and you'll find videos showing how to clean them.
I would buy an assortment of video recorder belts, since a bad or broken belt is a common failure in VCRs.
