Good deal on old Sun Sparc Station Power Supplies (Delta DPS-129AB)

I was looking for some cheap, slim, power supplies for an embedded
breadboarding platform. After buying two defective supplies from Weird
Stuff (+12V was around 10.6V, and fell to 9V under load), I found these
old Sun Sparc Station supplies.

I bought five of these supplies which are appearing at a bunch of
different surplus stores and web sites around the country, for wildly
different prices. This site has them for $5.95 (though the shipping
costs hurt on such a heavy item):

I opened one up, and they look to be very well made. The regulation was
very tight, better than your typical el-cheapo PC power supply. No -5V,
but if you really need it an LM7905 from the -12 would get you some.

There is no good data sheet on the supply, but I figured out all the
connections on the cables, and made one up and posted it:

I have no connection with MPJA, this is the first time I've bought from

the vendor only offers an incomplete spec that they say is their "best
guess." The wiring of the remote sense signals was incomplete. The
connectors are all non-standard, but that doesn't matter since you'll

bought from Weird Stuff, both of which were defective. MPJA at least
made an attempt at a data sheet, unlike all the other companies selling
the same supply (often for a lot more money). I sent MPJA an e-mail with
the corrections to their data sheet. They missed something on the silk
screen of the board that defined one of the sense wires.

Oh, and I have posted a power supply, a log amp SCHEMATIC, and a
voltage divider PCB layout snapshot, and a few photos of finished product
that are in the channel right now. Those older posts are up in abse, and
no, I am not going to dig them up again for you. If I see the snapshots
as I browse my volumes, I may pop it up onto flicker.

If you were not so stupid, you would see that the site where the
schematic is has others, and I posted it after I mentioned it here.

I've been on USENET for more than 20 years. These things move in cycles.

A newsgroup will have a flood of spam from a nut case like Zarathustra
(or whatever name he uses at the moment). Many people will construct
elaborate filters to screen him out, then all of a sudden it will stop.

Some less dedicated readers won't bother with filters and will leave.
The troll will eventually get tired of going through the trouble to try
to get around filters and will leave. He (or she) will move on to annoy
people in another newsgroup. They may come back after a while as they
cycle through their target list of groups. We had a very similar troll
in rec.photo.digital, and he got tired and left (may even be the same
person).

Personally I'm amazed that Usenet is still so useful and that all it
requires is some judicious filtering of these nutcases to make it readable.
