Lamp "tap" switch is switching on by itself

I have a lamp that is switched on by giving it a light tap. It has four settings. First tap switches on at low intensity. Next two taps make the lamp brighter and the last tap switches the lamp off. Recently the lamp has been misbehaving in that, of its own accord, it switches itself on. Can anyone tell me why this might be and what I could possibly do to correct it? Thank you

Interference in the mains can make these things go belly-up. Electrical noise from unsuppressed series motors, electric welders etc etc. May not be in your residence.
