But I wonder how many Americans will admit that the
antics of the US government make it rightly the butt of
a lot of bitching?

Antics? Please elaborate.
Certainly none of the blindered Dubya fans, that's for
sure. He can do no wrong, you know. I can't understand
why those nasty French don't like him. They must be
savages. Yeah, that's it.

Not savages, just massively crooked.
It's amazing the number of people who would rather be
right than happy. :)

Cheers!

Well, before you sign up, do they give you any kind of indication
what you might be in for? Anybody who signs up for a 2-year hitch
and then whines and snivels because they can't fly back to Mommy's
lap on a moments notice doesn't deserve to have been sent on a road
trip at taxpayer expense in the first place.

Peace on Drugs!

Do you claim to be an American? You certainly are a vicious animal
with no regard for our troops and their need for leave.

Oh? And what war was occurring in Alaska so that we were so desperate
for R&R?

The war was with the severe weather. I served at the US Army cold
weather test site.

I was stating that I knew how the soldiers fell to be isolated due to
the inability to use their available leave time. Would you spend over
nine months pay for a week away form severe duty? Have you ever worked
where you can freeze to death in less than five minutes? How about zero
humidity that dried out your skin and left you with dry cracked skin,
and bloody sores? You had to use half a bottle of baby oil after every
shower to reduce the drying effects. Thirty seconds after it was
slathered on, your dry skin had adsorbed every bit of it.

Have you ever had to walk over mile at -40°F, then spend the next
hour and a half in a cold shower to slowly recover lost body heat? How
about becoming so heat intolerant that you sweat heavily in a 60°F room
wearing nothing but a pair of shorts and a tee shirt? The place was so
cold it stopped snowing in the winter, because there wasn't enough
moisture in the cold air to precipitate. They had to use a road grader
to level out the pack ice, because there was no place to plow the six
feet or more worth of snow. It was a dangerous place to live and work.
All this, even though you had specially designed clothing and boots to
survive the cold weather.

BTW, The base severed as the transfer point for US made airplanes in
the Lend-Lease program during WWII. CIvilian pilots flew the newly built
planes the Ladd Air force base, and Russian pilots flew them across the
bering straights to Russia. After WWII the base was closed, then
converted to the cold weather test site, and renamed Ft. Greely. It was
closed again a few years ago, and is now being converted to a new
missile base.

Did you know that you can donate some of your frequent flyer miles to
benefit our troops getting to their homes from Iraq?

The military generally flies a soldier only back to his base. Your
frequent flyer miles can get them the rest of the way home....

http://www.heromiles.org/

I think most of the airlines are now participating.

...Jim Thompson

Damn! I guess I owe everyone a massive apology. I only meant to post
a way to aid our troops to ease their getting home on leave.

Instead I aroused every hate monger in the world :-(

Just found a way to make myself feel better. I figure if you're
anti-American you have no right to any technical assistance from me,
so I plonked a dozen of you, permanently. Bye ;-)

I guess you go to the movies and start talking on the phone. That's what
free speech is for, isn't it?

: HEHEHEHE, which newsgroup are you specifically referring
to? Are you
: saying the majority is the only one allowed a voice? Are you
saying I don't
: have the right to FREE SPEECH? It's funny how some people claim
to believe
: in certain universal rights, as long as it doesn't
inconvinience them.

I don't recall the Constitution or any of it's amendments
stating that our rights should be instilled into the rest
of the world.

: FWIW I'm not anti-american, you can consider me more
anti-Bush. I have
: quite a few american friends who think exactly the same as I do
about this
: whole Iraq thing. What percentage of American's agree with what
Bush is
: doing?

FOUR MORE YEARS, FOUR MORE YEARS.
On the OIL issue. So what if we use oil and pollute the
air and water supply. This planet is doomed anyway by virtue
of nature itself. The universe is ever changing and will
continue to do so no matter what we do to, in, and around it.

: Oh, and BTW, the backwards country I'm from is your neighbour
to the North.

You're just upset because Bush's new Medicare Prescription
Plan will be taking your pharmaceuticals business away.
BOO HOO!

You've gone off of your own topic. The discussion was
concerning content in an unrelated arena. What you are
saying now concerns good/bad manners.

Way off base on the FREE SPEECH issue. That gives us
the right to have an opinion and to vocalize it without
worry of persecution as long as we don't intend to act
on it in a way that would violate any other people rights
or the laws of the land. FREE SPEECH does not give us the
right to talk like a moron however, or be vulgar or insulting
towards our fellow citizens.

When I joined the Navy in 1987 I knew in the back of my mind that there
might be a chance that I could be involved in something. In 1991 when
Operation Desert Storm started I volunteered to go to the sands to help
Marines set up communications sites.

Even though I love my family == I was only 22 yrs old and single at that
time == I gave no regards to what could possibly happen. I didn't care.
Maybe it seems strange to some people but this was and still is my thinking
== I would gladly give up my life for my country in order to give back what
it gave me. My wife and friends know that I would have gladly traded place
with any of those soldiers who didn't want to be in Iraq. However, I am
passed the age of service. But if my country called on me I would do it.

I definitely don't expect everyone to have the same feelings and I won't
criticize those who don't. However, I strongly believe that in order to
secure your right to protest and disagree there has to be someone to make
sure that those rights are there.

I truly believe that every citizen of the world should have the same rights.
It is not the sole responsibility of the US and UK to remove from power any
government or individual that commits genocide and other atrocities against
their own people or others == it is the responsibility of the entire world.
There are regimes in Africa that remove the hands and feet of men, women and
children who don't take their side. These people need to be removed == ANY
WAY NECESSARY to ensure that those people can live without fear.

It seems to me that most of today's liberals, if they were alive during WW2,
would not support Roosevelt and Eisenhower for going after Hitler. It seems
that all that is important now is protecting everybody's rights regardless
of the consequences. Hussein killed his own. He should now suffer the
consequences not be given some sort of immunity because the left is
empathetic.

There are too many people that want us to pull out of Iraq but history has
taught us that we can't do that: On Armistice Day -- 11 Nov 1918 -- when the
surrender was signed for WW1 we pulled out of Germany without lending them a
hand in the rebuilding. That is ONE of the reasons that WW2 started. They
still felt the animosity for us not helping them. When WW2 ended we did the
opposite: We help those countries that were in the Axis to rebuild. That is
why we HAVE to stay in Iraq until that country is stable enough to work on
its own. Could you imagine the consequences if we left that country now in a
state of shambles? Sometimes thinking with our hearts is not the right way
to do things and we have to put our emotions aside and do what is necessary.
Sometimes doing what is necessary is not what we want to do but what we have
to do.

MHO
